When it comes to protein, there are a number of choices for supplementation. There is a debate in the weight loss community between Soy vs Whey Protein. Soy Protein For many years, soy protein was the most popular ingredient in many weight loss food supplements. Years later we find that recent studies have shown that claims of “cardio-protection” and “anti-aging” benefits may be false. In addition, soy may have some negative health effects as well. The soy plant, from which soy protein is derived, contains phytoestrogens or natural chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. Estrogen is a naturally occurring hormone – but we don’t need more of it. In fact, our population as a whole may be “estrogenized” as industrial chemicals in plastics that hold our foods, in the air we breathe and in the water we drink also mimic estrogen in the body. Too much estrogen can lead to side effects such as fat retention in the abdomen and the breakdown of muscle. When you are trying to lose weight, the last thing you need is something that breaks down your muscles and increases the amount of fat you store – not to mention it certainly isn’t good for men and may be the cause of breast tenderness in both men and women. In addition, a lot of the soy protein available is from genetically modified plants – or GMO foods. We don’t know for certain that they are bad, but they weren’t made that way in nature. Whey Protein Whey protein is the least processed form of protein and is easier for the body to absorb through the GI tract. It is made from milk and has greater concentrations of amino acids that are needed for muscle building. Whey protein also has beneficial effects on hormone levels. It can reduce cortisol production, which is a stress hormone that causes the body to retain fat and breakdown muscle. Whey protein is also thought to reduce levels of “ghrelin” a hormone that triggers the hunger sensation. If you use whey protein, your body is less stressed, you preserve muscle and lose fat, and you aren’t as hungry. In addition, since it comes from milk – it isn’t a genetically modified plant product. It also may have a protective effect on the colon and the prostate gland in men and may help maintain glutathione levels which can boost the immune system. You may be lactose intolerant and concerned about milk based proteins - even though whey protein comes from milk, it doesn’t contain the milk sugar “lactose” and won’t cause those digestive issues.
